What is Fluorescence
Fluorescence refers to the glow you see when an object emits visible light. Some diamonds exhibit this fluorescence when they are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sources like the sun and fluorescent lamps. This can cause them to emit a bluish light or more rarely, a yellow or orange light. Once the UV light source is removed, the diamond stops fluorescing. Unless exposed to heavy UV lighting, a diamond’s fluorescence is hardly visible.
Fluorescence in diamonds are graded as None, Faint, Medium, Strong and Very Strong.

How does Fluorescence Affect Price?
Sometimes, a diamond’s fluorescence will have no effect on its price. Colourless diamonds, those with a grade of D-F, will most likely sell at a discount if there is a fluorescent glow under a UV light, as the fluorescence is seen as a defect that makes the diamond seem coloured. However, fluorescent diamonds with a colour grade of I-M will actually benefit from fluorescence.
Should I Buy a Fluorescent Diamond?
The final decision on whether or not to buy a fluorescent diamond is up to one’s personal preferences. However, do remember that the 4Cs play a much more important role in the visual appearance of the diamond.
